Exercise needs

Plan familiar activities and walks, with clear opportunities to settle afterwards.

Grooming

This score is for the short coat; share the appropriate routine for other varieties.

Playfulness

Demonstrate a familiar scent or retrieving game, including how to bring it to an end.

Feeding & daily routine

Keep familiar food and portions consistent, counting food used in games towards the daily allowance. Write down dietary and medication requirements; extra activity is not a reason for the sitter to make large feeding changes independently.

A Weimaraner’s day is about more than adding up walking minutes. Discuss the activities your dog knows, how they settle afterwards and how the sitter should handle hunting distractions. This guide focuses on the short-haired Weimaraner; agree the appropriate grooming routine separately for a different coat.

Did you know?

The Dutch hunting association describes the Weimaraner as a versatile pointing dog used for work in fields, woodland and water. Pointing indicates the presence of game. For a sitter, the useful takeaway is a clear plan for lead handling and familiar activities, not a new hunting challenge.

Share an activity your dog already knows

Choose one simple scent or retrieving game your dog already knows. Demonstrate how it starts, how it ends and which reward you use. Ask the sitter to adapt it to your dog’s attention and comfort. Providing good care does not mean continually inventing harder challenges.

Include hunting distractions in the handover

The breed’s background makes clear arrangements about wildlife and off-lead exercise particularly useful. Record lead-only areas, the cues you use to regain attention and an alternative for a busy route. Assess a prospective sitter on an ordinary walk. “I like active dogs” is a starting point, not a complete walking plan.

Make the move from activity to rest familiar

After the trial walk, show where your dog rests and how you bring games to an end. Discuss company at home and your dog’s experience of being alone. Keep to the usual short-coat care and explain which changes in skin, paws or behaviour to report. Follow your vet’s advice for any existing condition.

Your Petbnb trial: plan an ordinary afternoon

Ask the sitter to describe an afternoon with your dog: leaving home, a walk, food, an activity and rest. Fill in any gaps together, then agree when you will receive an update and who can be contacted with concerns. A useful plan need not run to the minute; it needs to be familiar and realistic.

Feeding during a stay

Keep familiar food and portions consistent, counting food used in games towards the daily allowance. Write down dietary and medication requirements; extra activity is not a reason for the sitter to make large feeding changes independently.
