Give your Rhodesian Ridgeback time to get to know a new sitter. A first meeting need not involve a busy room or a group of unfamiliar dogs. A familiar walk, an unhurried introduction and a chance to settle tell you much more about how the stay could work.

Did you know?

The ridge is a strip of hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat, usually with two whorls. It is a coat feature, not a guide to an individual dog’s training or temperament.

Take introductions slowly

The breed description notes that Ridgebacks can be reserved with strangers. Let your dog choose when to approach, and explain the greeting that works at home. Discuss visitors and a resting spot where the dog will not constantly be approached. A successful introduction gives everyone useful information; instant affection is not a requirement.

Agree on leads and routes

The Ridgeback has a hunting background. Be specific about lead use and your dog’s response to wildlife, cats and runners. On a trial walk, demonstrate how you pass a familiar distraction at a comfortable distance. Share the cues you use to turn away or regain attention. Keep the first stay within established boundaries rather than testing recall somewhere new.

A simple coat routine still matters

The short coat usually needs relatively little grooming. Pack the usual brush and show which handling your dog is comfortable with. Check paws together after the trial walk and agree what the sitter should report. Discuss sleeping arrangements too: a familiar blanket and an agreed quiet spot are more useful than a general description of your dog as sociable.

The Petbnb trial: arriving and settling

After your walk, spend a little quiet time together at the sitter’s home. This lets you discuss settling as well as lead handling. Agree what to do if your dog keeps watching the door or leaves a meal. A brief update about behaviour and appetite is more useful than expecting the first visit to feel completely familiar.

Feeding during a stay

Write down normal portions and meal times. Pack complete food for their life stage, and ask the sitter to report a missed meal rather than improvise a different menu.
