A Birman benefits from visits that follow a familiar routine, not just a full food bowl. The CFA describes a people-oriented, moderately active cat who likes joining everyday activities. This is a starting point, not an instruction to put every Birman on your lap. Discuss how your cat chooses to approach and when they prefer to rest undisturbed.

Did you know? Some Birman kittens share an initial

According to the CFA, many breeders follow the French tradition of giving kittens born in the same year names beginning with the same letter. Your cat’s everyday name may differ from the pedigree name. Write down both the name and the sound your cat normally responds to for the sitter. This starts the introduction with something familiar.

Practise one ordinary visit together

During your Petbnb meet and greet, do more than point out the food bag and litter tray. Demonstrate the first few minutes of a normal homecoming: where do you put your bag, where does the cat wait, and how do you offer contact? Let the sitter repeat the sequence while you are present.

Make room for company without constant handling. Your Birman may like lying beside someone sitting quietly, or following you around the room. Explain which place they choose. Agree that the sitter will not remove them from a hiding place for a photograph. An update about food, behaviour and voluntary contact is more useful than a compulsory cuddle portrait.

Comb the coat your cat has now

The GCCF suggests weekly combing as a starting point for the silky coat, with extra attention when the winter coat sheds. Consider your cat: which areas need checking, and how long is combing comfortable? A breed description promising easy maintenance does not mean every cat can manage the same routine.

Leave the familiar comb ready and point out one area where you gently begin. Show how to recognise the need for a break and say whom to contact if a tangle will not loosen without pulling. Plan calm grooming separately from lively play; the sitter does not need to try a new treatment.

Make time for company and play

Show a familiar toy and practise a short game with a clear finish. Explain where it is stored afterwards and where your cat likes resting. With several animals, the sitter must also know who can eat or play together and who needs a separate space. The breed’s sociable reputation does not replace these arrangements.

Keep meals familiar

Provide complete cat food for the appropriate life stage and keep normal, measured portions. Include food used in play and treats. LICG emphasises that needs vary between cats; discuss uncertainty about body condition or quantities with your vet. With several cats, record how the sitter checks that each gets their own portion. Provide clean drinking water and do not casually change food during care.

Three questions for the sitter

  • How will you offer company if my Birman wants to be nearby but does not want touching?
  • Can you demonstrate our combing routine and stop at the agreed signal?
  • With several cats, how will you check who has eaten their meal?

Use our cat care guide for the general routine, and discuss cat sitting costs alongside what each visit includes.

Use our pet sitter checklist to record the remaining practical arrangements.
