Exercise needs

An active dog who enjoys following scents. Combine suitable walks with familiar searching activities and rest.

Grooming

The short, dense coat needs less extensive maintenance than a long coat; occasional brushing remains useful.

Playfulness

Searching games give this scent-focused dog something to do. Agree which games, equipment and food are suitable.

Feeding & daily routine

Give complete dog food for the right life stage and measure the usual portion. Beagles can easily become overweight: include food used in searching games and training treats in the daily allowance. Also record how you handle food your dog finds on walks for the sitter.

For a Beagle, an interesting scent can suddenly become more important than everything nearby. This active breed needs opportunities to use their nose, a clear plan for walks and plenty of thought about when they need company. A sitter therefore benefits more from your daily approach than from the description ‘cheerful family dog’.

Did you know?

The Raad van Beheer mentions a white tail tip in its Beagle breed description. Their scent work is much better known: the breed was used for hunting in packs. A distinctive tail in the distance is, of course, no substitute for the lead and recall arrangements your dog needs. Source: Raad van Beheer: Beagle.

Give their nose something to do

Walking does not have to be just about distance. Sniffing and a familiar searching game can make the day more interesting. Show a sitter a game your dog already knows and agree which food or toys to use.

The hunting instinct needs attention: a Beagle following a trail will not necessarily return when called. Agree where they must stay on the lead and only let them off when the surroundings and their recall make it responsible to do so. For a first stay, ask the sitter to follow your usual approach rather than trying out more freedom.

Plan companionship and rest

Beagles were originally pack hounds and may struggle with being alone. Tell the sitter what your dog has learnt, how they respond to absence and when someone needs to be present. A breed description does not provide a safe standard time for being left alone.

Discuss other animals in the home too. Because of their hunting instinct, unsupervised contact with small pets is not something to take for granted. A quiet space of their own gives them somewhere to settle between activities.

Explain how you manage scavenging

LICG notes a tendency towards excess weight and warns that Beagles like picking up edible things on walks. Choose complete food suited to their life stage, measure the usual portion and include rewards. The packaging gives a starting point; your dog's condition also helps determine whether the amount is suitable.

Tell the sitter how you handle food on the street and where food is stored safely. An extra searching game does not have to mean an extra meal: agree whether some of the usual food will be used. Ask your vet for advice if unsure about weight or feeding.

A short coat still needs care

The short, dense coat needs less extensive grooming than a long coat, but occasional brushing remains useful. Show how you do it and explain which changes to skin or ears the sitter should report. Handing over routine care is different from asking a sitter to try a treatment.

What to discuss before the stay

Walk from the front door to the street with a prospective Petbnb sitter and practise your normal departure routine: attach the lead, open the door and leave together. Also show how you walk past a spot with food scraps. At home, prepare a familiar searching game with an agreed part of their food allowance; this is a specific activity, not an extra meal.

For example, ask:

  • How would you stop my dog slipping out through an open door or garden gate?
  • What would you do if they picked up a scent trail or found food on the street?
  • How would you make sure they have company at the times they are used to?

Use the pet sitter checklist to gather practical supplies and arrangements.
